The Fox Film Corporation needed a western star to back up Tom Mix. Buck Jones made a long series of movies for Fox. I like the images in this ad. Buck and his leading lady stand on a water wheel. Buck appears to cling to a truck of a freight car. "A Picture With a Thousand Throbs and Thrills." "Throbs?"

Fox promoted four of its big western/action stars in this ad. Tom Mix was the greatest western star in silent films. Charles (Buck) Jones was their backup western star. Dustin Farnum and his brother William both appeared in many westerns, but also in a variety of other films.

I was amazed to see how elaborate this two-page ad for Tom Mix's The Night Horseman, which was a sequel to The Untamed. Both films were based on novels by Max Brand (Frederick Schiller Faust), who wrote lots of Westerns. He later created the character Doctor Kildaire.

"Let your crowd go wild with excitement when the fearless king of cowboys fights the skull-faced demons." Sounds like an exciting serial. Art Acord was another contemporary of Mix and Jones, who appeared in many silent films, but did not make the transition to talkies.
