Comedian Billy Gilbert was born 125 years ago today, on 12-September-1894.  He appeared in an enormous number of movies with a great variety of stars, and he always made the movies better.

He was Herring (Hermann Göring) in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. I love Herring's reaction when Hynkel tears off his decorations.

He was Professor Theodore von Schwarzenhoffen, M.D., A.D., D.D.S., F.L.D., F-F-F-and-F in Laurel and Hardy's "The Music Box," their only film to win an Academy Award.

In "Pardon My Scotch" with the Three Stooges, he was Senor Luis Balero Cantino, a singer.  The Stooges popped various pieces of fruit into his mouth while he tried to sing.

Slipping Wives -- August 24, 2016

Priscilla Dean had been a popular actress in the late Teens and early Twenties.  By 1927, her career had slipped.  This made it appropriate that she appeared in Hal Roach's short comedy "Slipping Wives."

Herbert Rawlinson was a leading man who later did character parts in Talkies.   Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy appeared in the movie, but not as a team.

A note at the bottom of this ad says that it is a cornerblock provided to theaters to use in newspaper advertising.

Happy 125th birthday to comic genius Stan Laurel.  He we see him with his partner Oliver Hardy and James Parrott, brother of Charley Chase.

Today is also the 100th anniversary of the death of actor Elmer Booth, who is best remembered as the charming gangster in DW Griffiths' "The Musketeers of Pig Alley."  Booth was driving an auto with director Tod Browning and actor   George Siegmann.  Browning later worked with Lon Chaney.  Siegmann had played Silas Lynch in Birth of a Nation.  The auto hit a streetcar.  Booth was killed and Browning and Siegmann were injured.

In honor of the beginning of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Goat, here is "Angora Love," a Laurel and Hardy two-reeler.  A goat follows the boys home and they try to care for it.  It was later remade as a talkie, "Laughing Gravy," that featured a dog. 

I like goats.  A friend in San Luis Obispo dealt with the vegetation on a steep hillside by keeping a flock of pygmy goats.

Dark haired beauty Madeline Hurlock gets top (only) billing in this ad for Hal Roach's short comedy "Duck Soup," which is not the feature starring the Marx Brothers.  This movie, in fact, featured Laurel and Hardy in an early appearance together, before they became an official team.
