The Longest Day -- June 6, 2024

80 years ago today, Operation Overlord began with the invasion of France by the Allies on D-Day.  This was a major step towards the end of the war.  The Longest Day, made in 1962, starred most of the actors in Hollywood and Europe.  Many of the actors had served in the war, and some were present at D-Day.

It is a long movie, but it was done well.  I watch it when it turns up on television.

New Edison Films -- Latest Feature Subjects -- June 5, 2024

New York Clipper, 01-February-1908

The Edison Manufacturing Company offered a wide variety of short films. To me the most interesting item is "Rescued From an Eagle's Nest," a 1908 film which was directed by pioneer Edwin S Porter. The lead actor was future director DW Griffith. The battle between Griffith and the stuffed eagle is epic.

"The Suburbanite's Ingenious Alarm" sounds like fun. This was a 1907 film directed by Porter.

Dennis Weaver 100 -- June 4, 2024

I don't remember Dennis Weaver on Gunsmoke. I didn't watch McCloud. I did enjoy the Mad Magazine version. I love his performance as the creepy motel clerk in Orson Welles' Touch of Evil.

Franz Kafka 100 Years -- June 3, 2024

Prague author Franz Kafka died 100 years ago today, on 03-June-1924. Very little of his writing had been published. He wrote constantly, but was insecure and didn't finish many of his novels.

I think I began to understand The Trial after I had worked at Wells Fargo for many years.

Orson Welles made a film of The Trial, which I find it painful to watch.

Larry Semon -- The Girl in the Limousine -- June 2, 2024

Film Daily, 26-June-1924

Like his contemporary Lloyd Hamilton, Larry Semon was trying to move into feature productions. The Girl in the Limousine was based on a play by Wilson Collison and Avery Hopwood. Larry Semon and Noel Smith directed. First National was going to release the film.

The Girl in the Limousine was not successful. The movie is considered to be lost.
