Fred Astaire 125 -- May 10, 2024

listal.com

Fred Astaire was born 125 years ago today, on 10-May-1899. I'm not a major fan of musicals, but I love watching Fred Astaire and his various partners, including Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, Eleanor Powell, a hatrack and especially Ginger Rogers.

I wanted to be this cool and elegant, but I could never manage it.

I couldn't do this, either.

Magnificent Doll was a 1946 movie about future president James Madison (Burgess Meredith) and Alexander Hamilton's (David Niven) rivalry in courting the widow Dolley Payne Todd (Ginger Rogers), who became Dolley Madison. Frank Borzage directed.

I love Ginger Rogers, but I don't think she looked anything like Dolley Madison.

I'll Be Seeing You -- November 11, 2019

www.listal.com
Happy Veterans Day, everyone. David O Selznick produced I'll Be Seeing You, which starred Ginger Rogers, Joseph Cotton, and Shirley Temple.  Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotton's characters both have secrets, which they keep from each other.  Cotton played a veteran sergeant who has been treated for shell shock.  Rogers is a woman who was convicted of manslaughter, who gets a furlough to spend Christmas with her aunt and uncle.  They fall in love after meeting on a train.

One of my favorite scenes is when Shirley Temple's character brings home a Second Lieutenant who is fresh out of training.  First Sergeant Cotton salutes him, and the 2LT, played by John Derek, says something like "I should be saluting you."
