Happy Memorial Day, everyone. I thought this was a good day to write about Otto Preminger's In Harm's Way, which was the last big World War Two epic shot in black and white. It starred John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal and a host of others. Critics didn't like the movie and Kirk Douglas thought the special effects in the final battle were amateurish, but I enjoyed. It starts in Hawaii before Pearl Harbor and shows how the US Navy adjusted to war. I assume that Saul Bass designed the poster.

Beautiful and troubled actress Linda Darnell was born 100 years ago today, on 16-October-1923. She spent most of her career under contract with 20th Century-Fox, but Fox had trouble finding suitable roles for her.

She appeared in several movies with Tyrone Power Jr, including The Mark of Zorro and Blood and Sand.

Forever Amber should have been Darnell's big break, but the critics didn't like it. The book was considered smutty by some and the Legion of Decency condemned it. She fought with director Otto Preminger.

Gene Tierney 100 -- November 19. 2020

Beautiful actress Gene Tierney was born 100 years today, on 19-November-1920. I try to watch Laura,  directed by Otto Preminger and written by Ring Lardner, Jr, whenever it shows on Turner Classic Movies. I love The Ghost and Mrs Muir. She developed bipolar disorder and received more than 20 shock treatments. She later campaigned against shock treatments.

74 years ago a sneak attack by forces of the Japanese Empire sank much of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor in the territory of Hawaii. The Japanese Empire came to regret doing this.
