Roscoe Atbuckle, banned from films even though he was never found to be guilty of the death of actress Virginia Rappe, asked Will Hays, chairman of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, to allow him to return to performing in front of the camera. Hays said no.

This item reports rumors that Roscoe Arbuckle, who had been in two murder trials that resulted in mistrials, was going to Europe to tour in vaudeville. I don't think it happened.

A report said that a theater in Berlin was planning to show his films, which had been banned in the United States. German newspapers were displeased: "if they are not worthy of being shown in the United States, they should be equally unfit for Germany."

100 years ago this month, the second trial of Roscoe Arbuckle for the death of Virginia Rappe ended with a mistrial, not an acquittal as the title of this post and article suggest. The defense proved that several vital items of evidence had been faked, and they put the victim on trial, with testimony about her alcoholism and promiscuity.

Worried about scandals spoiling customers' views of Hollywood and leading to inconsistent censorship laws all around the country, motion picture industry leaders invited Harding Administration Postmaster General Will H Hays to come to California and chair the new Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America. The MPPDA created the Motion Picture Production Code, a list of dos and donts for filmmakers. We will hear more about the Hays Office and the Hays Code.
