San Mateo, a town down the peninsula from San Francisco, was the home of the Peninsula Studios, which had been founded around 1920 as the Pacific Studios. The studio produced many short comedies, but around 1924, when it became Peninsula Studios, producers Frank E Woods and Elmer Harris planned to make feature films.
