Halloween is coming. 

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello teamed up in burlesque and went on to Broadway and the radio.  In the 1940s, they made a series of popular comedies for Universal.  Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (Heck of a title) was an attempt to reproduce the success of 1948's Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was better.

The Frankenstein Monster in The Asylum of Horror -- October 25, 2024

Halloween is coming.

Frankenstein's Monster made a personal appearance at Hagerstown's Warner Brothers' Maryland Theater. He was part of The Asylum of Horror, a horror/comedy show starring magician Dr Silkini (Jack Baker). The monster was played by Art Dorner, who was said to have doubled for Karloff in the Universal Frankenstein films.

I never saw it, but I have read about a famous Halloween episode of Route 66 which featured Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and "Lon Chancey, Jr."

Happy Flag Day, everyone. Jacqueline Wells began appearing in silent films as a child. After a substantial career in talkies, Warner Brothers asked her to change her name so she would appear to be a fresh face. She chose Julie Bishop. The Black Cat with Karloff and Lugosi is a wonderful movie.

Horror Shockers -- Son of Frankenstein -- May 21, 2021

When I was young, I read Warren Publishing magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland and Vampirella. The magazines always carried ads for back issues, posters and movies. I didn't have a film projector, so I read the ads with envy. Eventually, I got a Super-8 projector, but I didn't have enough money to buy any of these films. A friend had Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and I was fascinated by the way it had been cut down to less than 20 minutes.

This section of an ad has Son of Frankenstein, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and The Dr Cyclops. In Son of  Frankenstein, Boris Karloff played the monster for the last time. Bela Lugosi played Ygor the hunchback. I Was a Teeenage... was a popular title for exploitation films in the 1950s. Dr Cyclops was heavy on the special effects.

Frankenstein -- October 29, 2015

I think Boris Karloff is the greatest interpreter of Frankenstein's Monster, in the 1931 Frankenstein and the 1935 Bride of Frankenstein.  I had a small reproduction of this poster in my room when I was growing up. I first saw both movies on Creature Features, a late night horror show on KTVU Channel 2, hosted by Bob Wilkins.
