Famous Monsters of Filmland -- Mystery of the Wax Museum -- October 27, 2023

Halloween is coming.

When I was young, I read Warren Publishing magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland and Vampirella. I remember reading that The Mystery of the Wax Museum was a lost film. Then someone found it and I saw it on television, in two-color Technicolor. Fay Wray was the leading lady and Lionel Atwill was the bad guy.

William Gillette Personally Appearing in His Famous Success -- January 27, 2023

Washington Times, 28-January-1923

William Gillette played Sherlock Holmes more than 1300 times. He wrote the play. He retired several times, after long farewell tours, and then made triumphant returns. His last farewell tour ran from 1929 to 1932.

The following week the National Theater was going to present Lionel Atwill in The Comedian by Sasha Guitry. Atwill went on to become a popular character actor in talking films.

Horror Shockers -- See These Great Horror Flicks in Your Own Home -- November 18, 2021

Vampirella 52, 1976

When I was young, I read Warren Publishing magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland and Vampirella. The magazines always carried ads for back issues, posters and movies. I didn't have a film projector, so I read the ads with envy. Eventually, I got a Super-8 projector, but I didn't have enough money to buy any of these films. A friend had Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and I was fascinated by the way it had been cut down to less than 20 minutes.

This ad features highlights from Psycho and two Universal horror films split into pieces. "House of Dracula" and "The Wolfman's Cure" were created from the feature House of Dracula. "Frankenstein's New Brain" and "Trial of Frankenstein" were created from the feature Ghost of Frankenstein
