Florence La Badie Dead -- October 13, 2017

100 years ago today, on 13-October-1917, movie star Florence La Badie died from injuries she suffered on 28-August-1917 when the brakes failed on her automobile.

Florence La Badie began her film career in 1909 at the Biograph.  DW Griffith directed her in several movies.  In 1911, Florence moved to the Thanhouser studio, where she became their principal leading lady.

Her leading man was James Cruze, who later became a director. His most famous production was The Covered Wagon.

After she finished the serial Patria, Pathé promoted star Irene Castle as a Pathé Gold Rooster Star, like "Pearl White, Baby Marie Osborne, Gladys Hulette, Mollie King, Frederick Warde and Florence La Badie.

Her next movie would be feature about the Secret Service.

Gold Rooster plays would not only feature big stars like Irene Castle, but also the works of great writers like AH Woods.  I have never heard of him.

Zudora's Friends Again Rescue Her -- February 26, 2015

The Million Dollar Mystery was a Thanhouser production made in association with the Chicago Tribune, which ran the weekly stories in printed form. The 23-chapter serial starred Florence La Badie, a popular Thanhouser actress who died in 1917 in a car wreck. Her leading man was James Cruze, who later became a director. His most famous production was The Covered Wagon.

We saw back in November that production had stopped after the 22nd episode so that fans could submit their proposed solutions to the mystery and the winning entry would be produced:

Three of the stars, Sidney Bracy, Marguerite Snow and Florence Labadie, pretend to dig through the great pile of submissions received in the mail.  The lucky winner would get $10,000 and appear in the 23rd episode.

Moving Picture World had a photo of the actual judges, Harold MacGrath, who wrote the story, May Tinee of the Chicago Tribune, and Howell Hansell of Thanhouser.

The Million Dollar Mystery was such a success that Thanhouser began converting its next serial, Zudora, which was already in production and distribution, into a sequel.  The title became The Twenty Million Dollar Mystery (inflation) and in episode 8, James Cruze switched from being a villain to being the hero.  Sidney Bracy and Frank Farrington, who had been in The Million Dollar Mystery , also joined the cast of Zudora

Episode 22 would be the last of The Million Dollar Mystery until a later date.  "Episode number twenty-three, which contains the solution of the mystery, will be released at a date to be announced later, and will be made from the best solution submitted by those who have seen the pictures."  The winner would receive a $10,000 prize.

The San Francisco Giants defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 in the seventh game of the World Series.  Madison Bumgarner was the winning pitcher and the MVP.  It was a heck of a season.  The Royals put up a great fight.
