In Arizona Tom Mix joined the Buckey O'Neil Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Despite various publicity stories, Tom served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War, but he did not serve overseas.
Buckey O'Neill was an officer in the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders, who were led by Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War. O'Neill was killed in action during the Battle of San Juan Hill.
