Larry Semon was a member of the January, 1916 New York newspapermen's golf pool tournament.  He was still working as a cartoonist.  He shot a good score in the first round.  Golf came up in some of his movies. Rube Goldberg was famous for his cartoons depicting over-complicated inventions.
