Barbara Hershey, Christopher Guest and Tom Wilkinson 75 -- February 5, 2023

Occasionally, I notice that more than one famous person was born on the same day. For instance, Judy Garland and Jake Lamotta were born on the same day, 10-June-1922. I find this interesting because they had so much in common.

Barbara Hershey, Christopher Guest and Tom Wilkinson were all born 75 years ago today, on 05-February-1948.

Barbara Hershey was in many television shows. She wasn't taken seriously early in her career, but I think she got better and more interesting as she matured. Her movies included Hoosiers, Swing Kids and the popular family favorite Boxcar Bertha.

For a spell in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she used the stage name "Barbara Seagull." It didn't last.

I love Christopher Guest's mocumentaries like This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. He is married to Jamie Lee Curtis.

The Year of the Rabbit -- February 4, 2023

Showmen's Trade Review, 05-June-1940

In honor of the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Rabbit, here is the most famous rabbit of all, Bugs Bunny.

The San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade is tonight. The parade has taken place since the 1860s.

27-July-1940 saw the debut of the Buck-Toothed Barrymore, the Hardest Working Hare in Show Business, the Chairman of the Carrot Patch, Bugs Bunny.  There is some controversy over the identity of the first Bugs Bunny cartoon.  Some people favor "Porky's Hare Hunt" from 1938.  Some people like other movies, but the rabbit's official debut was in "A Wild Hare," which was released on 27-July-1940.  Tex Avery directed it.  Bugs said "What's up, Doc?" for the first time.  Warner Brothers received an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject.

We Now Have in Stock Méliès' Greatest Triumph -- February 3, 2023

New York Clipper, 14-March-1903

The American Mutoscope and Biograph Company released "Robinson Crusoe," Star Film's production number 430–443. This was made by French producer, director, writer, set designer and actor, Georges Méliès. I do not know if Biograph held rights to the movie, or they were engaging in piracy.

Larry Semon Invited to Join Chinese Tongs -- February 1, 2023

Chico Enterprise, 27-February-1923

Please excuse the racism, but I thought this was an interesting item. The Hip Sing Association and the On Leong Chinese Merchants Association were actual tong organizations, which had criminal and non-criminal elements.
