Actor and writer Dirk Bogarde was born 100 years ago today, on 28-March-1921. He did intelligence work in the British Army during World War Two. He was one of the first Allied soldiers to enter the Bergen-Belsen death camp. He wrote memoirs, novels and journalism.

After the war, he became a successful leading man in movies.

In A Bridge Too Far, Bogarde played Lieutenant General Frederick "Boy" Browning, commander of the British I Airborne Corps.

A Twitter friend recently watched Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice and said "This Death in Venice movie is kind of depressing." I couldn't argue with him. I never went back and said he should read the novella.
