Arbuckle Going Abroad -- June 29, 2022

Film Daily, 06-June-1922

This item reports rumors that Roscoe Arbuckle, who had been in two murder trials that resulted in mistrials, was going to Europe to tour in vaudeville. I don't think it happened.

Film Daily, 14-June-1922

A report said that a theater in Berlin was planning to show his films, which had been banned in the United States. German newspapers were displeased: "if they are not worthy of being shown in the United States, they should be equally unfit for Germany."

Color and Sound -- June 28, 2022

Film Daily, 07-June-1922

The movie being filmed under the working title The Legend of Troubled Seas was released as The Toll of the Sea. It was the second feature film made by the Technicolor Corporation, the first to be released and the first using the subtractive, two-color Process 2. It was also the first film starring Anna May Wong. The film is still available.

Technicolor Process 1 was an additive two-color process and it required a special projector. Process 2 could be shown on a regular projector.

Film Daily, 02-June-1922

I have not been able to find information about the Vocal-Educational Film Corporation and its sound process.

Film Daily, 08-June-1922

The Vocal-Educational Film Corporation used a device which could be attached to a standard projector. The device allowed the film to be synchronized with phonograph records. The speakers were behind the screen, which was an improvement over some sound-on-disk systems.

Meet Jobyna Rulston -- June 27, 2022

Moving Picture World, 10-June-1922

Jobyna Raulston's career progressed rapidly from support Paul Parrot (Charley Chase's brother) in Hal Roach one-reelers to supporting Harold Lloyd in features to starring in Wings. In almost no time, the press learned how to spell her last name.

Moving Picture World, 03-June-1922

Mack Sennett produced many short comedies starring Billy Bevan.

Moving Picture World, 10-June-1922

Mack Sennett also produced features starring Mabel Normand.

Film Daily, 11-June-1922

In the Teens, Joe Rock and Earle Montgomery made a lot of short comedies for Vitagraph, but few survive. Joe Rock went on to produce comedies with Stan Laurel, and later the Ton of Fun movies.

Film Daily, 07-June-1922

High Class Colored Photo Play -- June 26, 2022

Springfield News-Sun, 18-June-1922

Oscar Micheaux was a pioneer in producing what were known as race films. 100 years ago this month, one of his films was playing in a High School Auditorium in Springfield, Ohio. "Produced by Micheaux Film Co. of Chicago, largest colored film company in America."

Dallas Express, 03-June-1922

Last month we saw that the Benroy Motion Picture Corporation of Dallas was looking for investors. I'll keep looking for information about director Fred D Wilson.

Birmingham News, 06-June-1922

Someone was trying to sell his stock in the Gay Theater Company "which operates colored theaters in Birmingham."

Chattanooga News, 24-June-1922

A ladies' group complained that white children, including girls, had been seen going into a theater that catered to African-Americans. Excuse while I clutch my pearls.

Dallas Express, 03-June-1922

I have mentioned before that I greatly admire John Harris, owner and manager of the Grand Central Theater in Dallas, who had a policy of showing race films. The Dungeon was an Oscar Micheaux production. I cannot find anything about Are You Fit to Marry? It sounds like an exploitation film.

Ben Hur -- The Greatest Motion Picture Property in the History of the Screen -- June 25, 2022

Film Daily, 11-June-1922

The Goldwyn Company, which Samuel Goldwyn left in 1922, purchased the rights to the popular novel Ben Hur, published by Civil War general Lew Wallace in 1880. The book was adapted into a popular stage play in 1899. Future western star William S Hart played Messala.

Film Daily, 11-June-1922

Several producers fought to win the motion picture rights to Ben Hur. There was a plan to make most of the movie abroad.

Moving Picture World, 24-June-1922

After much struggle, the movie was released in 1925.

More of Sherlock Holmes -- June 24, 2022

Moving Picture World, 03-June-1922

This article mentions John Barrymore's upcoming adaption of William Gillette's play Sherlock Holmes and Stoll Pictures' two-reel adaptions of Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories, to be released in the US by Educational. Eille Norwood played Sherlock Holmes and Hubert Willis played Dr John Watson.

Moving Picture World, 03-June-1922

Educational planned to release a Holmes film every two weeks.

Moving Picture World, 17-June-1922

Educational previewed the films to a brain trust of writers from the trade papers so they could give "advice as to the best methods of exhibitor exploitation..."

Moving Picture World, 17-June-1922

Educational stressed that this was a series rather than a serial, and that any story could be watched independently of the others.

Moving Picture World, 24-June-1922

The Holmes pictures would bring in business even during the hot summer months.

Castle Films -- The Most Famous Monster of All Time -- June 23, 2022

Castle Films Catalog, 1970

I recently came across this scan of Castle Films' 1970 catalog. I never had enough money to buy any of these films, but I enjoyed looking at the catalogue entries. As a subsidiary of a subsidiary of Universal, Castle had access to many of the company's classic horror films.

Buster Keaton in First National's Club-Swinging Comedy -- June 22, 2022

Seattle Star, 23-June-1922

"Cops" is one of Buster Keaton's best short films. I was surprised to see it referred to as "First National's Club-Swinging Comedy."

Moving Picture World, 10-June-1922

"Mebbe You Hate Your Mother-in-Law But You'll Love Buster Keaton." "My Wife's Relations" is funny but not one of Buster's best.

Film Daily, 11-June-1922

Eddie Cline directed or co-directed most of the series of Buster Keaton Comedies. I like the photo.

Chaplin -- If a Laugh is Worth a Dollar -- June 21, 2022

Moving Picture World, 24-June-1922

I like the design of these ads for Chaplin in "Pay Day." A large amount of white space was not common in 1922 ads.

Sayre Knows Just What
White Space Will Give

There are not many things you can tell J.W. Sayre, of the Jensen and Von Herberg houses in Seattle. He has been through the mill ad while he is still learning, he knows a lot, and some of his work is exceptional. One thing he learned long ago was the value of white space and another was that you do not have to see certain stars on argument, but through announcement. He knows that a large space is good, but that it does not have to be filled with a lot of selling talk for Chaplin. He outlines his campaign on 'Pay Day' and says:

"I am enclosing proofs of a series of four ads I got up here on Chaplin. He opened Saturday and these ads ran Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, a regulation ad going in on Friday.

"The ads must have had some effect as there was a long line before the Liberty box office by 10:30 or Saturday morning and business almost shattered the house record on Saturday and Sunday and has been exceptional ever since.

"The feature I aimed for in the ads were first, to build up in size steadily -- I believe in a cumulative campaign reaching its crest about the day a picture opens and am all through with small teaser ads. Most of them are buried and lost, making them mighty expensive as compared with a few sizable ads, say one a day, well placed. I drew top of column in The Times with every one of these ads.

The second point I went after was to use few words and a lot of white space -- I always did believe in white paper in an ad. Even in the four-column ad I used only a one-column cut when plenty of four-column cuts were handy."

We do not agree with him on the teaser proposition. We believe that a good teaser campaign is a capital thing for a small town. We believe it because we have seen so many get over. As little as a two-inch space will get over even in a large town if a sufficient number of them are used. That is the nub of the argument. Teasers are good only when there are enough of them to get over. Two or more on a page are needed in many towns and small cities, where a single column, one inch, space in a small town may require only three.

WC Fields & Co -- June 18, 2022

Chicago Tribune, 30-June-1922

After a long career in vaudeville, WC Fields made his film debut in 1915, but then returned to the vaudeville stage and the Ziegfeld Follies. He did not appear in another movie until 1924. Fields appeared at the Majestic Theater in Chicago 100 years ago this month.

"Always COOL." This was a strong selling point in cities that got hot during the summer.

Moving Picture World, 03-June-1922

San Francisco's Warfield Theater opened in May 1922. Marcus Loew named it after his friend, the actor David Warfield. The Warfield Theater is still open, serving as a music venue. We saw Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett at the Warfield.

San Francisco Chronicle, 12-June-1922

Viola Dana, star of the opening movie, The 14th Lover, and a scad of other stars appeared at the opening.

Charles Jones in Rough Shod -- June 16, 2022

Moving Picture World, 03-June-1922

Buck Jones was Fox's second-string cowboy star, after Tom Mix. For some reason the Fox Film Corporation or Jones himself tried to bill him as Charles Jones. This is a remarkable photo.

Oklahoma City Times, 03-June-1922

Jack Hoxie was a real cowboy and rodeo performer who became a big star in the early 1920s.

Albuquerque Evening Herald, 12-June-1922

I always enjoy Hoot Gibson movies. He added a lot of comedy to his films.
